Paavo R. Zakin, MD is a highly regarded orthopaedic
surgeon in North Texas.
Recently retired from his private practice, his specialties
include trauma, sports
medicine, arthroscopy and total joint replacements, since 1982. Dr.
Zakin is also a
recipient of the 1992 Certificate of Achievement for his work with the
United States
Olympic Team Experience; A Model for Sports Medicine. Dr. Zakin
is not a "silver-spoon" surgeon; he worked on cars, professionally, for
over 5 years, before medical school training, and , as a family man,
continued to supplant his training stipends, by building and modifying
high performance cylinder heads and engines. In addition, Dr.
Zakin spent close to three years touring with NHRA Pro Stock teams,
much of that time as crew for a major, professional chassis builder.
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Zakin received numerous scholarship
awards, including
the Robert A. Welch Pre-doctoral Fellow and Scholarship Award from the
University of Texas
at San Antonio. A graduate of Mount Sinai School of Medicine, he served
his internship and
residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Texas Health
Science Center in
Houston, Texas. He has published articles on sports safety and physical
therapy
alternatives to hip and knee replacements for senior citizens.
Dr. Zakin has been an active member of the Texas and Southern
Medical Associations, Texas
and Southern Orthopedic Associations and Grayson County's Medical
Society and has been an
active surgical consultant to the Grayson County Rehabilitation Center
Advisory Board. He possesses Texas active medical license #H3294,
as well as Oklahoma active medical license #19305, and continues an
unbrokened record of over 100 Category 1 AMA credit hours/year of
continuing medical education.
He is the past, 1999 "National Businessman of the Year", awarded by
Congressman
Ron Clark, representing the National Republican Congressional Committee.
He is also the Past Chair-1999, of the Society of Manufacturing
Engineers, Chapter
051. He was most recently honored by SME, as the President's
Award
winner, and
honored with inclusion in the "Who's Who of Small Business
Professionals".
Dr. Zakin is also the current Vice-Chair for Internal
Combustion,
SAE-Texas Section, where he is an active member. He is actively
co-developing a continuously variable transimission for high-powered
motorsports and heavy equipment hauling, and is researching head-neck
driver safety devices for race cars. Dr. Zakin is certified in
three areas of motor vehicle accident reconstruction, which is a strong
avocational interest of his, especially in relation to motorsports
safety issues.
He has served, since 1993, as an orthopaedic consultant
and credentialed team physician, to the National Hod Rod
Association, and has previously been a team physician or consulting
team surgeon for
numerous high school and college athletic teams in Texas, Oklahoma, and
earlier in his professional career, in rural Wyoming. From the
inaugural racing event, at Texas Motor Speedway, through 2002, Dr.
Zakin participated as a pit row safety and security personnel, and
provided emergency trauma support services, to injured pit crew, media
workers, and spectators, at the American LeMans series race, in 2001,
during one of the most severe pit row accidents in motorsports
history.
